NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. said Monday it will sell the hair brand Propecia to a dermatologist after the U. S. Food and Drug Administration approved it, prompting the company to pull out of the market, and in January announced it would be halting sales of the hair-loss drug after the FDA said that Propecia and its generic equivalent, finasteride, are no longer approved by the FDA to treat male pattern hair loss.
In a statement, Wal-Mart said, "Our commitment to patient care and the quality of our product portfolio is the reason that we today announced the decision to discontinue our Propecia brand. The decision was made in consultation with our clinical pharmacists, who are committed to working closely with us to identify and address any new concerns."
The company said that Propecia is approved for hair loss only in men and women, with the former being approved in June and the latter in June 2020.
"This decision is a victory for those suffering from male pattern baldness, offering hope to patients and the millions of men who rely on Propecia," the statement said.
The company also said it is "helping our patients through this difficult time with their hair loss, where prescription medications have come to the market without proper oversight."
According to the company, the decision to discontinue Propecia should not be taken lightly, as long as the FDA continues to evaluate the safety and efficacy of finasteride.
The company will continue to market hair-loss medications and other products in the U. and abroad, while it remains committed to protecting consumers' health by making sure prescriptions are filled only with licensed doctors and pharmacists.
The company also said it has discontinued its hair-loss product line in the U. K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
In August, the FDA announced that Propecia had been pulled from the market after an independent panel concluded that it did not meet the criteria for safety and efficacy in men with male pattern hair loss, which includes those who are younger than 50.
The company said that it has discontinued the hair-loss drug after receiving approval from the FDA. The FDA's approval process includes evaluating all current and pending approvals for Propecia, including those that are still under investigation by regulators.
The company said that Propecia is being discontinued in all over the world. It is being sold in countries worldwide, including Canada and Japan, and is available in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
In the U. S., Propecia is currently available in the U. and Puerto Rico.
The company said that Propecia "should be available over the counter in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for men who desire to lose hair and women who are struggling with male pattern baldness."
In January, the FDA announced that it had suspended the sales of Propecia in the U. and Canada following the Food and Drug Administration's announcement of the potential for the drug to fall into the category of "dementia-preventive medicines" due to its use to treat depression and anxiety.

Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicinescalled Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.
Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (also known as androgeneticalopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss inmen. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from usingPropecia.
How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

There is a continuous flow of nutrients and oxygen into the body from the scalp, which help the body to fight off the loss of hair.
As the cycle proceeds hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2 months(rest phase). This circulation is essential for healthy hair and hair growth.
